The purpose of MUN or Model United Nations is to gain more awareness for our surroundings and the world. Gaining awareness and not being ignorant is an important skill to have because it allows you to analyze your surroundings. MUN has two main aspects to the whole project, you have the position paper which requires the research of the committee of which you’re in and then the conference day. The final conference puts your research skills and your debate skills into action as you acts as the role you received as you try to get your way.

The role that I chose for the Model United Nations project was the role as the Co-Chair of the committee. As a member of the Model United Nations club and elective, we organize the MUN project and take the role of chairs and co-chairs, the ones who make sure that the debate goes smoothly and in the right direction. I can definitely say that I’ve learned some skills while chairing my committee. This isn’t my first time on the dais of a committee which is composed of the Chair, Co-Chair, and Legal. In a previous debate, I was a legal and legals don’t have much say in the debate as they’re there to do miscellaneous tasks. This MUN project, I chose a more prominent role in the committee as the co-chair and this comes without saying, but there is usually a whole lot more work involved. There is the research about the potential outcomes and whether delegates actions actually conform to their characters. The skills needed to be a good chair are plentiful, you need to be versed in the topic, you need a to have a voice, and you need to be organized. I slowly realized that these were key skills in the debate and eventually I gained some experience in chairing a committee.
My first time on the dais of a committee was quite the miserable experience, the role of a legal that I chose was one of running around to crisis and trying to communicate with them and sitting for a good 4 hours listening to a debate that’s been derailed. Compared to this time as the co-chair with a more relevant role, it was so much better and I look forward to doing as maybe as the chair of a committee.
