The Hippie Movement started picking up around 1965 to 1971 before it run out of steam and support. The hippies believed in peace and returning to nature, ones origin so they abandoned most of the aspects that a conforming person of society had. They became anti-consumerist, anti-war, anti-capitalism, etc. One of their main focuses as a group as finding your own path and following it and the same applied to one's spirituality. However, they were not all sunshines and rainbows, they used drugs like marijuana and LSD to better find “spirituality.” All of these aspects piled up to make the hippies the way they are back in the 1960s but with a rise there is also a cause and that cause was the Vietnam War. |
The beliefs of the hippies happened to coincide with the public about the entry to the Vietnam War and with that public appeal, more and more people switched to become a hippie. I chose this because I wanted to learn more about the hippies besides the stereotypes because that’s just basic knowledge and it might not even be true, so I decided to investigate through this project. Throughout this project, I learned that the use of LSD was popularized through a Harvard Professor which was quite surprising seeing as the harmful effects of LSD are very detrimental. There are many surface facts about hippies when you just do a basic google search of a hippie but I researched by looking at the basic knowledge and asking why and how that happened.
After gaining intermediate knowledge about the movement, I decided that there were so many influences and ideas that I could incorporate to a diorama. The Vietnam War, Eastern Religion’s influence, Hippie Lifestyle, and Peaceful Marches that represented a hippie. These were all ideas that I could put into a diorama. Fredo decided to do a painting after a long and hard thought process. He is an avid artist and he wanted to try something new, something like painting which is an area he hasn’t explored at all.
There was a lot of action in the 1960s and some of them even coincided with the Hippie Movement, like the Psychedelics era, and the Vietnam War. I learned that in the Psychedelic Era that psychedelics influenced artists and music artists to make music that influenced the hippies in 1970. I didn’t know that some of the popular bands also embraced the hippie lifestyle, I did know that the hippies enjoyed music and that the Woodstock Festival was dedicated to them.
Research writing is a very complex yet fun process if you enjoy the essay you’re writing. I learned that you should cross reference as much as possible to get the most accurate data or piece of evidence. I also learned that you should get critique as much as possible as I lacked that part during the final steps and had to use a grammar checking site in the stead of a fellow classmate.
Movements shape the way were act even if it’s far in the past. I doesn’t necessarily have to be a movement, it just has to be an event that alters the way we view that action. A mass genocide is definitely doing to change the world’s view on that country and will have lasting effects, like World War 2. I believe that the trip to the museum was to confirm that belief as we saw past work that popularized forms of art in the Museum of Art and past movements/relics that changed the world in the Museum of Man.
On the field trip to Balboa Park, I went to the Museum of Man and toured the whole place with my buddy, Fredo. Together, we were most interested in the Mayans and the worlds has discovered about the Mayans. Their relics led us to discover their beliefs in the world just like other religious beliefs that exist. The Museum of Cannibalism was an extension of the Museum of Man and we also toured that time period. The stories of cannibals makes them out to be hideous creatures and something not to be associated with but beneath the surface there is a lot of history and valid claims that they weren’t so far out of society. Cannibalism was used to survive, for religious practices, and a wide array of other actions, but it didn’t make cannibals ravenous creatures.

I do feel proud about some aspects of the artifacts and there are some parts that I don’t feel proud of. I won’t blame the materials as I did find ways to make substitutes for the diorama, but there are definitely some aspects that I could improve on. One aspects of the diorama that I didn’t particularly like was the miscalculation of the television screen. There was a tiny gap on the top of the tv that I thought ruined the immersive experience. A major aspect that I didn’t like was the emptiness of the Hippie portion, I feel that I did include the major key parts of a hippie but didn’t express it in a very easy way. Other than that, I do feel proud in the adaptability that I had when making the diorama and I do feel proud of the overall construction process. This project did leave lasting knowledge on me because we did deep research, so I know that I’ll retain this knowledge.
